QUINTESSENTIALLY ENGLISH

Here is a short article that has appeared in newspapers around the world, including the Saudi Gazette and the Canada Free Press :

Quintessentially English

It is “the natural interweaving of plant forms” that makes watercolorist Susie Lidstone “especially obsessive” about the flowers she paints.

“Patterns in plant forms are quite abstract in their formation,” explains the artist, who is inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Scottish architect, designer, water colorist and artist.

“I love roses, which are quintessentially English - sometimes people think they are an old person’s flower but that’s not the case at all. I am also enjoying painting orchids and anemones at the moment. I suppose you might call my work realistic abstract - you can get lost in the movement of flowers as you paint them.”

Depending on the size and intricacy of a painting, it can take Susie between a week and a month to produce a piece, many of which can be viewed on her website.

MAY 2014 DRAWING ON ARCHITECTURE BY THE SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSTRATION

I am very pleased to have a page in the new book produced by the Society of Architectural Illustration, details below.  My page is here>>

PRESS RELEASE

Drawing on Architecture - edited by Joseph Robson and Richard Rees

A book giving examples of the best of British Architectural Illustration is long overdue and this publication by the Society of Architectural Illustration fills the gap perfectly.  Over 60 illustrators are represented here, each with two full colour pages of their work and with a short description of what marks out their style.  The illustrators are complemented by a short piece on the history of the SAI by Joseph Robson and an analysis of current trends in Illustration by Richard Rees.  A wide variety of styles and illustration types are included in the book, from traditional illustration through to computer rendering, model making and photography.

Lord Foster provides a preface and SAI Patron, Artist Ben Johnson, provides a foreword to the work.  Richly printed as a hard cover edition, (28cm. x 28 cm.) and designed by SAI Fellow Jon Willcocks, the book is a showcase of how talented and varied the architectural illustration scene is in Britain.  It will be on sale from 14th May at £25 a copy and will be available from the SAI and relevant architecture and art bookshops.

2013 CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARD

I am delighted to have been chosen by the charity Bright Research to design their Christmas Card for 2013.  Below is the Press Release announcing the commission and you can buy the cards - shown on the right - from the Bright stand at The Royal Surrey County Hospital's Christmas Fair on Wednesday, December 4; and at West Surrey Golf Club; or by contacting Caroline Allen on 07816 874 478 to place an order (£3 for a pack of five cards).

PRESS RELEASE

A Surrey artist has been commissioned to design a Christmas card for a leading UK charity.

Susie Lidstone from Farnham was approached by Bright Research, the bowel cancer charity, and has produced ‘Village Toys’ for this year’s card.

“I was approached by Dawn Stanford of Bright Research because she loved my work especially Trees in Farnham, and I was a local artist,” says Susie, an elected and exhibiting member of The Society of Floral Painters and an elected member of The Society of Architectural Illustrators.

“Much of their work is based at The Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford and St Lukes, which specializes in Cancer care. The choice of image was down to me. I did discuss it with Dawn and as a lot of their work is with children's cancer research as well a toy shop seemed ideal. Making it an old fashioned shop should suit adults, too.”

Dawn Stanford from Bright Research adds: “We are so grateful to Susie for all of her hard work creating this wonderful design for our 2013 Christmas cards.”

The initial print run with Jones Creative Serives in Leatherhead will be for 1,000 cards then ongoing after that. Jones Creative Services Ltd in Leatherhead helped with the printing costs.

The exclusive card design will be available in November - please contact Caroline Allen on 07816 874 478 to place an order (£3 for a pack of five cards). The cards will also be available from the Bright stand at The Royal Surrey County Hospital's Christmas Fair on Wednesday, December 4. And at West Surrey Golf Club.

I am really delighted to have been elected a member of the United Society of Artists (UA).  The UA is an independent, non-profit making society founded in 1921 which brings together and promotes the work of accomplished artists whose work covers a wide range of styles and subjects.  It is a real  honour for me to have been elected a member and I am very excited about the potential for inclusion in their exhibitions.
